Margaret Lenore “Maggie” Halminski, 92, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving children. She was born Margaret Lenore Polk on Dec. 30, 1923, in Santa Monica, Calif. Since 1999, she was a resident of Lansdowne Woods, Va., with Sylvester, her husband of 59 years.
She was an active member of her community, as chair and vice-chair of the Lansdowne Woods Activities Committee, the Budget & Finance Committee and Lansdowne Woods Women of Note. She was also an avid sports enthusiast and bridge player for all of her life. She and her husband bought a home in South Bethany, Del., in 1966 and loved the “beach house.”
She married her high-school sweetheart, a career Naval officer, and began raising a family and traveling the world. Tours included Japan, Newfoundland and Guam, as well as a number of stateside destinations.
During that time, she volunteered for many years as a Grey Lady, caring for patients in overseas military hospitals, and served on various sports committees in the schools her children attended. Her seven children were born in various places and raised in the Catholic faith.
Halminski was a friend to everyone she met. She had a wonderful sense of humor, even in her final days. Her passing marks the end of a long and fulfilling life, and she will be missed dearly.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, and is survived by seven children (four girls and three boys), as well as 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled for April 19, 2016, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, Va. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shepherd Foundation, at www.TheShepherdFoundation.org.
