Lawrence Vernon Hitchens, 83, of Lewes, Del., passed away April 1, 2018, at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes. He was born on June 21, 1934, in Harbeson, Del., to the late Lawrence A. Hitchens and Lulu Mae (Joseph) Hitchens.
Hitchens worked as a dietary aide at Beebe Medical Center for more than 30 years. Hitchens will be remembered for his love of flower-arranging and cake-decorating, always wanting ice cream, and playing the piano, which is how he got his nickname, “Piano Man,” by his CB friends.
In addition to his parents, Hitchens was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie F. (Taylor) Hitchens, and two sisters, Pearl Franklin and Doris Atkins. He leaves to cherish his memories a sister-in-law, Bertha Littleton; a brother-in-law, Edgar Taylor; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Although he had no biological children of his own, Hitchens was a second father to Carol Ann Miller and was loved like a grandfather by her children.
Funeral services were scheduled for April 9, 2018, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del., with interment at St. John’s Church Cemetery, on Route 30. The Rev. Dr. William Davis of Conley’s U.M. Church was the officiant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Conley’s U.M. Church, 33106 Jolyn’s Way, Lewes, DE 19958. Condolences
