Duncan J. ‘D.J.’ Runyon, 91

Duncan J. “D.J.” Runyon, 91, of Bishopville, Md., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at home. He was born in Port Huron, Mich., and was the son of the late Joseph A. Runyon and Zena M. (Crain) Runyon.

Runyon attended Detroit Bible Institute after graduation and did missionary work on a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, on the U.S.S. Bushnell submarine-tender. He had been a carpenter and poultry grower before retirement.

He loved the outdoors and spent time fishing and hunting. Throughout his life, he enjoyed motorcycle riding, horseback riding, playing the banjo and traveling with the Airstream Club. In his later years, he enjoyed getting outdoors in his “chair” for rides. He was also a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Bishopville.

Runyon was preceded in death by his wife, Kay S. Runyon, in 2010. He is survived by a son, Duncan J. Runyon Jr., and his wife, Jamie, of Berlin, Md.; a daughter, Lynn Wiseman, and her husband, Michael, of Holiday, Fla.; two stepsons, Tyler Travers and his wife, Chrissy, and Jerry Travers and his wife, Jamie, all of Bishopville; a sister, Rejina Runyon of Arizona; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at Bishopville (Md.) Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Sherwood officiating. Condolences may be sent online at www.bishophastingsfh.com.
