Charles Risley Griffiths, 78, of Ocean View, Del., passed away after an epic and victorious battle with cancer on Sept. 1, 2016.

A lover of oversized diet sodas, cheap red wine from a box and corned beef hash from a can, he was known as Charles, “Chuck,” “Charlie” and “Grumpy,” as well as a loving son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, brother, cousin, neighbor and friend to many.

Griffiths had a successful career as sales manager and throughout his life maintained his position as CFO of the Griffiths family, reporting directly to CEO and president, Diana. He funded many Griffiths family ventures, including countless visits from the Tooth Fairy, sneakers, new bikes, college, roofs, bathrooms and more.

He enjoyed investing and educating all who would listen, the importance of patience and monitoring the market. His later in life career of babysitter made him a fan favorite with his young charges, Matthew, Rebecca, Kari, Ellie and Charlotte. He could always be counted on to fall asleep during his duties, allowing mischief and mayhem to ensue.

Griffiths’ love of the sea dates back to his youth, when he lived in a lighthouse in Rhode Island with his mother, Anna Dellaquila, and later attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. He was an avid fisherman who was often unsuccessful but always optimistic and could be counted on to always catch a couple of empty Rollin’ Rocks. His son, Adam, will assume the role of captain of the faithful St. Jude.

As an athlete and a sportsman, Griffiths was an accomplished marathon runner, triathlon competitor, marksman, and soccer and track dad. His favorite pastimes included not washing his car, watching the New York Giants and chronic napping. His “Just Overdo It!” attitude was a source of inspiration and frustration to his family.

Active in politics, Griffiths was a patriot and esteemed member of various local and state committees. He was committed to these efforts and was — for those who may not have heard Fox News blaring through the house 24/7 at 50 decibels — a loyal member of the Republican Party.

Griffiths is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Diana; his son, Adam; his daughter-in-law, Caryl; his daughter, Lynn; a granddaughter, Charlotte; and his brother, Donald.

A visitation and Mass of Christian burial were scheduled for Sept. 8, 2016, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Bethany Beach, Del. Interment was to be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice; 100 Patriots Way; Milford, DE 19963. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
