Anna Lee Toomey, 83

Anna Lee Toomey, 83, of Gumboro, Del., passed away peacefully in the care and comfort of her family and the staff of the Delaware Hospice Center. Toomey was born in Grundy, Va., on May 1, 1933, to the late Allen and Mary Anderson.

Toomey owned and operated her own poultry farm for many years before handing it off to her son, Randy. She loved puzzle books, find-a-word and crossword. She enjoyed watching Joel Osteen, going out to eat and spending time with her family — especially her great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Toomey was also preceded in death by her husband, Randall William Toomey; a son, Randy Toomey; a daughter, Pamela McGinnis; and five siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie BeMiller and Brenda Toomey, both of Gumboro; seven grandchildren, Brandy Toomey, Lynn BeMiller, Billy BeMiller, Destiny Kuhn, Randi Carlin, Dale Toomey and Anna Kilgore; 13 great-grandchildren; and extended family members and friends.

A funeral service was scheduled for May 3, 2017, at the Watson Funeral Home, with burial at Carey’s Cemetery, both in Millsboro, Del. Anna Marie (Batter) Stanaitis, 91, of Delaware and formerly of Aston, Pa., died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, April 20, 2017. She was born on March 14, 1926, in New Philadelphia, Pa., to Stanley and Helen Batter.

Stanaitis dedicated her life to her family in every way possible and in ways that will live on forever. Stanaitis was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and baker. She loved people and life, and she lived her life to the fullest every day. She was simply a kind and beautiful woman who loved unconditionally and with her whole heart.

Stanaitis was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband of 61 years, Robert; her son, Robert; and her granddaughter, Melissa McGroerty Fisher. She is survived by her children, Elaine McGroerty and her husband, Tom, John Stanaitis and his wife, Judi, Anne Marie Moor and her husband, Bob, Richard Stanaitis and his wife, Liz; her brother, Raymond Batter and his wife, Dorothy; her grandchildren, Jim McGroerty and his wife, Danielle, Edward Fisher, Genesis Reifsnyder and her husband, Eric, Jessica Toomey and her husband, Dale, Destiny Moor, Robert Moor, John Stanaitis Jr., Jacob Stanaitis, Jared Stanaitis, Rylee Stanaitis; seven great-grandchildren, Seth and Hannah McGroerty, Hunter, Chase, Landon and Cameron Reifsnyder, and Grayson Toomey; and many beloved family members and friends.

Family and friends may help celebrate her life and legacy on Saturday, May 6, 2017, with visitation at 12:30 p.m. and services at 1:30 p.m., at St. Francis DeSales Church, Lenni, Pa. Donald George ‘Don’ Meyer, 73

Donald George “Don” Meyer, 73, of Harbeson, Del., formerly of Medway, Mass., passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug. 16, 1943, in Watertown, Wis., son of George E. Meyer & Lois (Gottschalk) Meyer.

Meyer graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1961 and went on to graduate from DeVry Technical School. He worked as a computer tech-support engineer for Honeywell/Bull Information Systems until retiring in 2012. He loved his ever-changing job and the challenge of solving the technical problems.

His favorite hobby was golf, and he was a member of the Wayland, Mass., golf league for many years, serving as their secretary. He was also secretary of the Board of Directors at The Trails of Beaver Creek, Harbeson, where he lived for three years. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Meyer was married for almost 47 years to Maureen Sweeney, and they have one daughter, Michelle Richardson, wife of Douglas, and three grandchildren, Noah, Rosalie and Parker.

In addition to his parents, Meyer was preceded in death by his brother, George C. Meyer, and brother-in-law, Richard Felix Lamrouex. He is survived by his three sisters, Evelyn Drake and her husband, Michael, of Yorktown, Va., Jean Lamrouex of Bowie, Md., Lorraine Nahmens and her husband, Charles, of Lacombe, La., and his aunt, Elaine Bailey, and her husband, Russell, of Bloomfield, Ind.; and his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of Meyer’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 10 a.m., with funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at Saint Jude the Apostle Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, Del. William C. ‘Bill Calvin’ Hudson, 82

William C. “Bill Calvin” Hudson, 82, of Gumboro, Del., passed away peacefully in the care and comfort of his family and the staff from the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del., on Friday, April 28, 2017. He was born in Bishop, Md., to the late Calvin P. Hudson and Naoma K. Day Hudson.

Hudson was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Delaware National Guard and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a poultry farmer and an all-around good person. He was friendly, never met a stranger and would always be willing to help someone out. He loved the outdoors and had a hard time being idle. Hudson loved his flowers beds, gardening, landscaping and playing with his great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Hudson was also preceded in death by a sister, Naoma Cordrey. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor L. Scott Hudson of Gumboro, Del.; three children; Ronald Hudson and his wife, Debbie, of Gumboro, Del., Douglas Hudson and his fiancée, Lisa Mears, of Laurel, Del., and Paula Candy and her husband, James Candy Jr., of Parsonsburg, Md.; three sisters, Mattie Lynch, Helen Mumford and her husband, Paul, and Antoinette “Ancy” Bowden; six grandchildren, Jimmy Candy and his wife, Sophia, Matt Candy and his wife, Denise, Steven Candy, Jeremy Candy and his wife, Shelby, Justin Hudson and Kari Hudson; and two great-grandchildren, Mollie and Colton Candy.

A funeral service was to be held May 4, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, with burial at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, both in Millsboro, Del. Phyllis ‘Dolly’ Browning, 84

Phyllis “Dolly” Browning, 84, died in the loving company of family in Leesburg, Va., on April 25, 2017. She was born on Oct. 3, 1932, in Ephrata, Pa., to Morse Brossman Sr. and Alzenia Brossman.

At age 16, Browning was stricken with tubercular meningitis, spending six months in a coma. Doctors said she would not be able to walk or have children. She proved them wrong on both counts. In 1951, Browning received a scholarship to study nursing at West Reading Hospital. She began corresponding through the mail with a young soldier from Pittsburgh, Pa., who had only seen a picture of her. The couple recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Browning was an active member of her community, serving in the Roxana Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary and hosting numerous fundraising events. She was an accomplished square-dancer who, with her husband, danced in all 50 states around the country.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Browning Jr.; four daughters, Donna Browning Hensley, Sandee Strong, Renee Haver and Valerie Preletz; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 605 W. Market Street, Leesburg, Va., with a reception immediately following at the Preletz household. Irene Phyllis Hammond (Tindley) Blake, 83

Irene Phyllis Hammond (Tindley) Blake, 83, of Bishopville, Md., bid farewell to the earthy world and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. At the time of her death, she was residing in Newark, Del., with her “baby girl,” who was by her side as she abandoned this temporary home for her eternal dwelling. Blake was born at home in Bishopville on Feb. 18, 1934. She was the only child of the late Donald Russell Tindley and Mahaley Janey Hammond Boone.

Blake was educated in the Worcester County (Md.) public school system. She married Quincy Billie Blake, better known as “Quint,” on Aug. 28, 1954, and they were married for 51 years. Their union produced six children. Blake worked hard to help support her family, and she toiled for many years in the poultry industry at various facilities, including Townsend’s, H&H (now Mountaire) and Showell Farms, from which she retired.

Blake was a faith-filled woman. She loved God, and she loved her church organization. She was an active member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith and served in many capacities.

Blake was preceded in death by her husband, Quint; her oldest daughter, Sandra; a nephew she raised like a son, Gary Hammond; both of her parents, Donald Tindley, and his wife, Aldermae, and Mahaley Hammond Boone; her brother, James “Sonny” Hammond, and his wife, Marguerite; and a special aunt, Vera Moore.

Blake was the surviving matriarch of the Blake family, as the wife of Quincy, who was one of 13 children produced by George and Mary Ayers Blake. To cherish the wonderful memories of her, Blake leaves five children; Patsy O. Blake of Wilmington, Del., Starr F. Blake of Salisbury, Md., Cindy R. Blake Rogers and her husband, Eugene, of Portsmouth, Va., Quincy D. Blake and his wife, Beverly, of Bishopville, Md., and Valada R. Blake of Newark, Del.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a special niece, Emma Lucille Cannon; a special cousin, Etta Mae Moore; the innumerable progeny of the Blake Ayers/Ayres family, the Tindley family and the Hammond family; her church family; and countless friends. She will be missed so much by so many.

Family and friends may call for visitation and viewing on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, Del. A memorial service will follow on May 5, 2017, at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, 20887 Milton-Ellendale Highway, Ellendale, Del. Family and friends may also call on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Calvary Pentecostal Church, N. Worcester Highway, Bishopville, Md., from 11 a.m. to noon, with a celebration of life service noon. Sharon C. Rogers, 65, of Selbyville, Del., passed away quietly at her residence on May 3, 2017. She was born in Gumboro, Del., on Oct. 6, 1951.

Rogers graduated from high school and married her beloved husband, William R. Rogers Jr., who preceded her in death on April 15, 2015. Together they raised a family. Rogers remained a homemaker, caring for her own children and her beloved “grandbabies.” She loved Chinese food and game shows.

In addition to her husband, Rogers was preceded in death by a grandson, her beloved Fhillip Wilkerson, on Oct. 18, 2011. She is survived by a son, William R. Rogers III, and his wife, Jessica, of North Carolina; a daughter, Sonya Rogers of Willards, Md.; a sister, Sandra, of Gumboro, Del.; five grandchildren, Erika Rogers, Kensley Rogers, Avery Rogers, Frank Wilkerson and Freddy Wilkerson; and extended family members and many friends.

Henry J. Ratcliffe, 74, of Dagsboro, Del., formerly of Baltimore City, Md., passed away on May 8, 2017, at his home. He was born June 27, 1942, in Baltimore, Md., a son of the late Henry M. Ratcliffe and Kathleen A. (Slaysman) Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe was a union steel worker until his retirement in 2000. He led an active lifestyle, doing tai chi and martial arts for more than 30 years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, scuba diving, riding his motorcycle and being part of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club. He was a member of the NRA and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2542 in Roxana, Del., and was a Navy Football fan.

In addition to his parents, Ratcliffe was preceded in death by a son, Brian M. Ratcliffe, on March 25, 1970. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Diane (Lawrence) Ratcliffe; daughter, Jacqueline A. Pine, and her husband, Bryan, of Baltimore County, Md.; a grandchild, Daniel A. Budrecki of Baltimore County; a sister, Anne Plemple and her husband, Joseph, of Baltimore City, Md., and their son, Andrew Pemple of California; and numerous cousins.

A visitation and prayer service were scheduled for May 10, 2017, at Melson Funeral Services, Frankford, Del. Interment set for May 11, 2017, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro, Del. Raymond A. Hughes, 72, of Millsboro, Del., formerly of Malvern, Pa., passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. He was born Sept. 26, 1944, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., a son of the late Carroll Hughes and Helen Davis Hughes.

Hughes worked for Hank’s Speed Shop in Berwyn, Pa., before opening his own shop, called Ray’s Automotive, in Paoli, Pa., before retiring from Champion Auto Rental. After Hughes’ retirement and move to Long Neck, Del., he had his own lawn-mowing business and worked for Baywood Greens.

Hughes was an avid golfer and enjoyed working on and repairing golf carts. While living in the Malvern area, he was an active member of the Paoli Fire Company, along with his two brothers.

In addition to his parents, Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnne L. (Pierson) Hughes; two children, Debbie Swope of Birchrunville, Pa., and Michael Hughes and his wife, Doria, of Chester Springs, Pa.; five grandchildren, Ashley Federsel, McKenzie Garrison, Chase Garrison, Michael Hughes Jr. and Hunter Hughes; a great-granddaughter, Mia Federsel; and a brother, Leslie Hughes, and his wife, Betty, of Long Neck, Del.

Nancy J. Hobbes, 85

Nancy Jersin Hobbes, 85, of Millsboro, Del., passed away at her residence, surrounded by her loving family and in the care of Compassionate Care Hospice. She was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Baltimore, Md., to the late Harold E. and Helen Kathryn Watson Jersin.

After graduating from Eastern High School, she went on to attend American University. She married her husband, William, in 1951. Together they raised three children. She also worked for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, retiring in 2000. William preceded her in death in 2010. Hobbes moved to Ocean Pines, Md., then to Millsboro.

She was a vivacious, fun-loving woman who balanced love and devotion with being a feisty lady. Hobbes thrived on social events with her friends, especially the Millsboro and Lewes bridge groups, and her love of the local restaurants and having a martini at the Blue Water Grill. She was an animal lover and adored her feline friend Friday.

Hobbes is survived by her three children, John William Hobbes and his wife, Susan, of Las Vegas, Nev., Wendy Carol Hobbes of Baltimore, and Charles T. Hobbes of Derwood, Md.; two grandchildren, Evan and Hayley Hobbes; and a brother, Wayne Jersin and his wife, Linda, of Dallas, Texas.

The family thanked Dr. Jennifer Hurd for her excellent care, friendship and going beyond the call of duty in her role as Hobbes’ physician.

Services and interment were private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions to the SPCA.

Charles Edward Graves, 89

Charles Edward Graves, 89, of Millsboro, Del., and formerly of Wilmington, Del., and Florida, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, May 5, 2017. He was born in Ashland, Del., on Feb. 3, 1928, to the late Lemuel and Viola Edler Graves.

Graves retired from Hercules Research Center as grounds foreman in 1983 after 30 years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Graves was a member of Bethany Community Church in Laurel, Del., and a past member of the Elsmere Fire Company in Elsmere, Del., as well as of the Masons and Lions Club, and Master of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed model trains, cooking, fishing, boating, camping and spending time with his family. The boy left the farm, but the farming never left him; he enjoyed riding on his John Deere tractor, cutting his grass. He also liked solving the world’s problems with his good friend Jack from Buffalo, N.Y.

In addition to his parents, Graves was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Marion C. Graves, on Jan. 16, 2017, as well as five siblings. Graves is survived by two sisters, Mildred Beeson of Smyrna, Del., and Betty Graves of Magnolia, Del.; his five children, Sandra L. Graves of Millsboro, Janice M. Vickers and her husband, William H. Vickers III, of Millsboro, Charles L. Graves and his wife, Beverly, of Georgetown, Del., Marion “Patty” Graves and her partner, John Woznicki, of Wilmington, and Deborah A. Hoover and her husband, Robert T. Hoover Jr., of Wilmington, Del.; 10 grandchildren, Billy, Tina, Kate, Lenny, Kirtis, John, Michael, Jesse, Bobby and Amber; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild on the way; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, Del., where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for visitation with the family. Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Frederick James ‘Fred’ Downs

Frederick James “Fred” Downs, 57, of Lewes, Del., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 4, 2017. He was born Sept. 28, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Frederick James Downs and Nancy Pinto Downs.

Downs was a Villanova University graduate and worked at Handy & Harman Company in Camden, Del., as a human resources director. He was a member of the Wandendale Hunt Club, Ducks Unlimited and Elks Lodge 2540. Downs was a leader and very active in Troop 2540 Boy Scouts of America for many years and mentored countless youths during that time. He enjoyed hunting, boating and spending time with family and friends.

Downs was a loving father and brother and is survived by a son, Lee A. Downs, and daughter, Alexandra M. Downs, both of Lewes; as well as his former wife, Tina Ballas Downs; mother-in-law, Joan Brohawn; and two sisters, Margueritte Downs Mertz and her husband, John, and Nancy A. Crass and her husband, Keith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, Del., where friends may visit one hour prior. Ronald W. Benton, 63, of Millsboro, Del., formerly of Bear, Del., passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del., after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis. He was born in Wilmington, Del., on Jan. 2, 1954, son of the late William R. Benton and Audrey (Richardson) Benton.

Benton proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the service, Benton worked as a car-hauler with Anchor Motor Freight, which eventually became Leaseway Motor Car, in Wilmington, Del., and Baltimore, Md. He was a member of Teamsters Local 326 in New Castle, Del. He was also a member of American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro.

Benton is survived by his wife of 18 years, Debra F. (Thompson) Benton; two children, Shawn Benton and his wife, Becky, and Tammy Benton and her spouse, Chrissy Hurst; two stepchildren, Corbi Bahel and her husband, James, and Eric Yates; his twin brother, Raymond Benton and his wife, Helen; a brother, Thomas Benton; a sister, Juanita Smith and her husband, Charles; seven grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

A committal service was scheduled for May 11, 2017, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Del. Timothy J. Munro, 68, of Selbyville, Del., died Sunday, May 14, 2017, at home. He was born in Bellingham, Wash., and was the son of the late Sterling S. Munro and Dorothea (Spears) Munro.

Munro started a home repair business in 1973 and then opened Fenwick Hardware in 1975. He was a member and on the board of Trustees at St. Matthews By-the-Sea United Methodist Church and past president of Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce for two terms.

Munro is survived by his wife, Pam M. Munro of Selbyville; a son, Timothy A. Munro, also of Selbyville; a sister, Jane A. Munro of Fredericksburg, Va., and a grandson, Sebastian D. Munro.

Donald F. Weisbrod, 80, of Selbyville, Del., died Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Harrison Senior Living in Georgetown, Del. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Francis Weisbrod and Mary (Flanagan) Weisbrod.

Weisbrod retired from Yellow Freight as a terminal manager and worked for the Town of Ocean City, Md., for 20 years as a bus driver. Weisbrod was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church and of the Swan Keys Sport Club. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

Weisbrod is survived by his wife, Jacqueline M. Weisbrod; a daughter, Jacquelyn M. Whitman and her husband, Eric, of Holden, Mass.; a son, Steven F. Weisbrod of Akron, Pa.; four grandchildren, Connor Whitman, Corey Whitman, Carson Whitman and Austin Weisbrod; and a brother, David Weisbrod of Whidbey Island, Wash.

Thomas Bruce Warner, 83, of Ocean View, Del., passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at his residence. He was born in Gates, N.Y., on June 9, 1933, son of the late William J. Warner and Matilda E. (Ehmann) Warner.

Warner was a proud U.S. Army veteran. He treasured time spent with his loved ones and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Warner was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris (Gardiner) Warner; a brother, Michael Warner; and a daughter-in-law, Kimberly Warner. He is survived by four sons, Bruce Warner and his wife, Karen, Brian Warner and his wife, Linda, Brendan Warner and his wife, Connie, and Brett Warner; his 11 grandchildren; his six great-grandchildren; and his brothers, David, Dennis and Christopher Warner.

A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled for May 16, 2017, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Bethany Beach, Del., Interment was to be private. Lawrence Emmett ‘Larry’ Stein, 91

Lawrence Emmett “Larry” Stein, 91, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 12, 2017. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 24, 1925, to the late Samuel “Pop” Stein and Jessie “Jim” (Goodman) Stein.

Stein spent his early years in the Cleveland area, served in the military and worked for many years on top-secret government projects in the Washington, D.C., area before retiring in Bethany Beach. During World War II, as a part of the 97th Division, 286th Regiment, Anti-Tank Company. He served as a communication chief in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He then took over telephone and radio communications in the Tokyo, Japan, area before returning home in 1946.

Stein greatly enjoyed his retirement years in Bethany Beach, spending many hours at the VFW Hall, the Cottage Café and Fox’s Pizza, enjoying his Heinekens. He loved dinners with family and friends at the 1776 restaurant, local crab shacks, cheering for the Washington Redskins and Nationals, and especially watching “Star Trek” at home.

Very near and dear to his heart were the friendships that he formed in Bethany Beach, most especially with Lisa Welling and Chris King. Stein’s family will forever be indebted and grateful for the love, care and concern shown to their uncle by Chris and Lisa.

Stein was preceded in death by his brother, Norbert Lloyd Stein, and his niece Judy (Stein) Milanski. He is survived by a niece, Joan (Stein) Buzas of Southington, Conn.; two nephews, Donald Stein of Bethany Beach and James Stein of Dallas, Ga.; many great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-nieces and -nephews, who all respected, admired and loved him dearly.

Helen G. Steele, 92

Helen G. Steele, 92, of Georgetown, Del., passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Harrison House in Georgetown. She was born in Laurel, Del., on Feb. 26, 1925, to the late Emory and Sally Dorman Foskey.

Helen retired as a floor manager for Arrow Safety Device, where she worked for 55 years. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Del. She was very involved in all activities and held many offices over the years. Steele loved to talk on the phone and keep up with her friends. She was a mother to many who had lost their mothers. She will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Steele was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Steele Jr., in 1997; a daughter, Phyllis Hitchens, in 2015; and a brother, Paul Foskey. She is survived by a son, Thomas E. Steele III of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; a son-in-law, Gerald Hitchens of Georgetown; a sister, Dot Niblett of Laurel, Del.; two grandchildren, Sherry Swift and her husband, Norman, and Kelly DeLeon and her husband, Brian, all of Georgetown; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

A funeral service was scheduled for May 16, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, Del., with burial at St. John’s United Methodist Church Cemetery.
