Helen Ilona Magyari Murray, 95, of Millsboro, Del., passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 31, 2017. She was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Yorkville, Ohio, to Hungarian parents Mary Bogas Magyari and Alex (Sandor) Magyari. The family originated from the Transylvanian region of Hungary, now part of modern Romania.

Murray was employed by the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. of Baltimore, Md., at the start of World War II to weld aluminum. She also worked to promote the company’s war effort and was featured in store-window presentations to help generate interest for women to join the factory war effort. After the war, she moved to Millsboro with her husband, Aubrey Phillips Murray, to begin their life together.

Murray had worked as secretary for the last two elected Sussex County Coroners, Douglas Melson and the late Vollie Gray, until the position was eliminated by the state legislature. She was very active in the American Field Service foreign exchange program and hosted exchange student Alberto Triana from Bogota, Colombia, in 1966 to 1967.

Murray authored, with her husband, the book “Magyar Lace,” based on the life of her mother, who grew up in Hungary and migrated to America before World War I to join her first husband, who had by then established himself in Ohio. Mary Magyari’s first daughter, Mari, had remained with her grandparents until she could travel to join her parents in Ohio. They were never reunited, but the family has remained in touch ever since and visited, even during the Cold War.

In addition to her parents, Murray was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Aubrey Phillips Murray; her stepfather, Nick Bochian, also of Yorkville; and her sister, Mari Zavicsa of Crizbov, Romania. She is survived by her son, Randy K. Murray and his wife, Sharyn, of Millsboro; her brother, John Magyari of Columbus, Ohio; nieces Cheryl Layfield and her husband, Gary, of Millsboro, Reynette Magyari of Gahanna, Ohio, Michelle Kenworthy and her husband, Randy, of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Klara Suba of Romania; her nephews, W. Britt Murray and his wife, Bernice, of Georgetown, Del., Allen Magyari of Columbus, John J. Magyari of Galena, Ohio, and Sandor Mozes, Arpad Mozes, Alpar Illyes and Joseph Illyes, all of Romania; and the caregivers who enabled her to remain in her home in her last years, Lillian Taylor, Terry Cox, Charlotte Williams, Jeanette Hall and Ernestine Tindal.

A visitation was scheduled for April 5, 2017, at Melson Funeral Services, Millsboro, Del., with funeral service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Millsboro, Del. The Rev. David Archibald was to officiate. Entombment was to follow in Millsboro Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.

Frank Preston Marshall, 93, son of the late Emory C. Marshall and Mary Bell (Murphy) Richardson, was born on Jan. 29, 1924, in Pollocksville, N.C. He departed this life on March 25, 2017.

Marshall attended the Jones County Training School in Pollocksville until the fifth grade. He moved to Delaware in 1944, where he met and married Ionia Marie Handy, who had an infant daughter of her own, Geraldine (who now has two sons, Weldon and Wendall Hall), whom he adopted and claimed as his own. Many years after the marriage had ended, he reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Blanche, of Comfort, N.C. Dickerson Chapel Church would become their church home. Marshall joined the men’s choir and sang/hummed along until dementia started to rob him of his memory.

His work history consisted of various jobs, including chicken-catching, truck-driving, transportation shuttle bus driver, corn dumping operator and a construction laborer. He used his southern farming skills to grow vegetables, peanuts and grapes (which all of the neighborhood kids were allowed to enjoy).

Marshall was an example of God’s greatness and what God can do for anyone who has a mustard seed of faith. God took a man with a fifth-grade education, and gave him the skills, work ethic and knowledge to build his home back in 1959 (with the help of a few buddies).

He also became a self-made businessman by purchasing a small rundown house and renovating it to become his wife’s Ionia’s Beauty Salon, and later a rental property. He also purchased a second small home and turned it into a rental property. The entrepreneurial spirit that lived in him has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. “So ask yourself, are you smarter than a fifth-grader?”

In addition to his parents, Marshall was preceded by his wife, Blanche Lee (Rhodes) Marshall; four sisters, Katie Marshall, Clara Lee Duncan, Mary Elizabeth Stokes and Glennie Bell Darden; and a brother, William Henry “Ham” Marshal. He is survived by his five children, Teresa Marshall of Upper Marlboro, Md., Cynthia Basnight of Capitol Heights, Md., Frank A. Marshall Sr. and his wife, Elmira, of Richmond, Va., Bruce E. Marshall and his wife, Robin, of Seaford, Del., and Bryan P. Marshall of Frankford, Del; 15 grandchildren, Anthony Hovington of Washington, D.C., Tanya Hovington of Salisbury, Md., Keenan Marshall of Upper Marlboro, Md., Frank A. Marshall Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Eric Marshall of Washington, D.C., Ericka Pearson of Virginia Beach, Va., Konya Crippen of Newark, Del., Nychelle Hartley-Scott of Baltimore, Md., Jeremiah Marshall of Woodbridge, Va., LaToya R. Holmes of Baltimore, Bruce E. Marshall Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., Robby Marshall of Baltimore, Bryson K. Marshall of Frankford, Isaiah and Ahmir Marshall of Richard, Va.; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

A celebration of life service was to be held April 3, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del., with private interment.
