Laura Lewis McCabe, of Millsboro, Del., transitioned home on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at her residence. She was born on Sept. 1, 1929, in Parsonsburg, Md., to the late Ella Bratton and George Foskey.
McCabe attended grammar and elementary school in the Pittsville public school system. She spent many of her younger years working in vaccinating chickens, and at Aunt Minnie’s restaurant, Jack Graves’ grocery store and later the Acme supermarket, from which she would retire after working as a cashier for 26 years.
McCabe loved her children and grandchildren and would call her children each night. She will be remembered for her home-cooked meals, especially for making a “mean” piecrust. She never met a stranger. McCabe was indeed a hugger who hugged everybody and didn’t like shaking hands. She was also known as a wife, sister, mother and grandmother to several of the “saltwater cowboys.”
McCabe was a faithful member of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church in Millsboro. She was also a member of the Lift Group. She loved Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art,” among other gospel hymns.
In addition to her parents, McCabe was preceded in death by a brother, George Foskey; a sister, Elizabeth Truitt; and a grandson, Justin Lewis. She leaves to cherish her loving memory three children, Adrian Rayne of Willards, Md., David E. Lewis and his wife, Betty, of Snow Hill, Md., and Teddy Lewis and his wife, Cheryl Lynn, of Gumboro, Del.; a sister, Shirley Jackson of Laurel, Del.; and 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
