William H. “Bill” Prettyman, 86, passed away March 15, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his two loving daughters. He was born May 12, 1930, in Millsboro, Del., to the late William Walter Prettyman and Mary Hester Stevenson Prettyman.
Prettyman was a graduate of Georgetown High School, Class of 1949. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1951 to 1955, receiving an honorable discharge thereafter. Prettyman was employed as a carpenter in the late 1950s, a salesman for Bowman Products during the 1960s and for the State of Delaware, retiring in 1991 as a constable for the Justice of the Peace Courts.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years and also of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church. Prettyman enjoyed gardening, tinkering with his farm tractors and playing cards. He also enjoyed watching western movies and UFC. Above all else, he adored spending time with his beloved family, all of whom will miss him greatly.
In addition to his parents, Prettyman was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Rebecca, in 2013, as well as a brother and three sisters, Dale Henry in 1911, Kathryn P. Wilkins in 1995, Mary P. Hill in 2000 and Violet P. Pepper in 2002. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Mary Beth Burton and her husband, Jack, and Suzanne Timmons and her husband, Steve; a brother, Ralph Prettyman and his wife, Betty; a brother-in-law, Dale Hudson; two grandchildren, Stephanie Timmons and Will Burton; two step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and a step-great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.
A funeral service was scheduled for March 20, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del., officiated by the Revs. Robert Hudson and Norman Poultney. The family offered a special thank-you to the staff of Vitas Healthcare. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hickory Hill U.M.
